The DHL Sprint School – and the new Manchester Track I was invited earlier this year by British Cycling to represent the Calshot Track Racing League at the inaugural season for the DHL Sprint School. It was amazing to go “back to school” at the Newport Velodrome after racing there for the past three years. The Sprint School encourages and coaches young riders up to the age of 15 in the skills of track sprinting. The culmination was a “Keirin race day” as a supporting event for the Future Revolution on 13th October. I attended three full training days throughout the year, each of which had schooling with classroom tactics, track handling skills, mechanical repairs, healthy eating advice (and great lunches!), and the best bit – riding with the stars. On the first day I was also given a DHL race bag which included a Sprint School race jersey, towel, cap and waterproof race cape. During my Sprint School sessions I met and rode the track with Victoria Pendleton, Anna Blythe, Craig McLean, Jamie Staff, Ross Edgar and Chris Hoy. They were so helpful and friendly. Geoff Cooke was excellent with the coaching chats and de-briefs. I have my own password protected webpage but the main website can be reached onMy track racing this year was at Herne Hill, Welwyn, Preston Park, Palmer Park, Portsmouth, Cardiff, and in September I rode the new track at Manchester (shortly after it had been resurfaced) in the final round of the National Youth Omnium series. It was blindingly white compared to the original track and all day the fresh pine smelt like a DIY wood department. A tough final event but I consolidated my 7th overall in the National Series this year. The DHL Sprint School finale at Newport in October was awesome with a great crowd. We had been training behind Dernys throughout the year and my best race position was a second. It was a shame I was the only representative from the Bournemouth Arrow, but it was a great ending to my track racing season this year. William Couch Slades Farm Cycle Track During and after our Summer Go-Ride Sessions at Slades Farm, Dave Gilham, George Bolton, Anne Stevens and Alan McRae have all been involved in various meetings, formal and informal, with Councillors and Council Officials. Contributions were made to the production of a Questionnaire put out to 1500 local households over The Local Authority’s plans to develop Slades Farm. A number of local consultations were attended together with a Public Open Meeting. The Questionnaire indicated there was massive support for the 250 m outdoor cycle track with 72% of the respondents in favour of the Scheme. As a result, the Local Authority is proceeding with an Application for Planning Permission. This will include some preliminary engineering, together with environmental and traffic impact assessments and cost estimates. It is hoped that this process will be complete by May 2008 when we would be starting our next Summer Programme. Separate preliminary meetings on funding have also been held with British Cycling. Formal application for funding will be made by British Cycling after Planning Permission has been achieved. Alan McRae Road/Track/MTB/Cyclo Cross The year 2007 without doubt the poorest season our Club locally has experienced. The exception to this decline being Danny Lloyd the Bransgore born professional rider. He finished second in the Chinese Tour of Qingin where he was beaten in the final overall by just one second. Further into the season he rode the National Elite Road Race and once again took second place to TDF rider David Miller, performances that have put him on the very edge of Olympic selection, well done Danny! Our men in the Bristol area are showing us the way. Ed Griffin has had some great results when you consider that most of his results have come from National Standard races with riders that are on the development program for the 2012 Olympics with many top 10 placings. 10th National Junior road race championships 6th 1st Chard Wheelers road race 5th Castle Combe Summer Series 12 6th South Circuit League 3 8th Bath Road Club Junior Grab Prix 8th In Gear Junior Tour of Sussex These are just some of Ed Griffin’s best results. Sean Conway, the comeback kid took advantage of staying in front of the scratch group to record a first place in the evening road race at Moreton. Track (Calshot) Sunday Winter League. Both William and David Couch are back in action on the Calshot track and are giving visiting clubs a few sore legs. The same track is used by us for individual and group training under the supervision of Alan McRae. The Club is trying to get a similar track at Slades Farm. Quote: “It is no use saying we are doing our best. You have got to succeed doing what is Necessary.” Winston Churchill Contributed by Dave Moss.
